110v+220v metering

Post by Matthew246 »

Good day, I have a question for those of you more experienced with these meters.

In my office I have 110v lights and wall sockets and a 220v air condition unit. In order to monitor the over all monthly KWh usage of the entire office and all of its devices, do I need two separate meters? One for the 110v circuits and one for the 220v? or can one 110-220v 3/4 wire meter do the job?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hello Matthew246, welcome to the forum!

Either:

Any of our Omnimeter models will work for you (with 2 additional external CTs): http://www.ekmmetering.com/ekm-metering ... cally.html
or
One of our 25IDS could work for you (if your wire is under 3/8" in diameter, you are metering under 100 amps, and you have relative easy access to your wires): http://www.ekmmetering.com/basic-kwh-me ... 25ids.html

Your system is considered a 120/240 volt 3-wire system, this is the most common residential system in the USA. If you measure (with a multimeter) from either hot wire to neutral you get 120 volts, and if you measure between both hot wires you would measure 240 volts.

If you would like a recommendation for the exact meter you need, please let us know these things about your system:

What is the amperage of your system?

What is the diameter/size of your wire (preferably in millimeters)?

Are you happy with a basic read on the LCD screen meter, or would you like a meter that you can read with your computer or over the internet?

Thanks!
Jameson

i was considering this meter "EKM-OmniMeter II UL v.3 Universal Smart Meter, Single Phase or 3-phase, 120 to 240V, 50/60Hz up to 5000 amps"

I am not 100% certain about the amperage of the system as i am in the process of constructing the office and i haven't yet come to a solid conclusion on the lighting. As well, i an going to have to install a second A/c unit.

i do like the idea of being able to read over the internet though so i can answer that one definitely.

does each CT support ONE wire only or can i bundle wires and pass them them through one CT? for example, i have 2 circuit breakers one is for all the 120v lights, and one is for all the 120v plug outlets. Can i bundle the hot wires from both breakers and pass them through ONE CT or do i need to get separate CT's for each circuit breaker?

Sorry for the slow reply, this post slipped past me.

Yes, you can pass multiple wires through the same CT. However you HAVE to make sure that all the wires are from the same phase (phase A for example) and that they are all going through the CT in the same direction.

Thanks,
