Reset date and lost communication

Post by Tim »

I had to change the date on my 25IDS meter and now it won't communicate with Dash. I get a "bad meter response" error. Additionally, the date changes on its own when I close out of the editor to a time in the future. I discovered this when reopening the editor.

Hello Tim,

It sounds like you have an older EKM 25IDS-N. Were you able to communicate with your meter before changing the time? Were you able to successfully set the time?

Now if you go to EKM Dash > Help > Hex Inspector what do you see in your Hex Response from the meter? Will you paste it here?

Thanks for your help.

Yes I was able to communicate prior to the date change.
Yesterday 12/5:
After changing the time and pressing ok, I received the bad response error. When I checked the time/date again it was a time and date in the future, i.e. set the time to 8 pm on 12/5, pressed ok, got a bad response error, checked the time/date immediately and it had changed to 5 something am on 12/6, or the next day.
Today 12/6:
Opened Dash, read both meters successfully, checked time/date on meter that had trouble yesterday and it was current. Paused reading, closed Dash. Reopened Dash, read meters and received "bad meter response " error on the troubled meter, checked time/date and it read 3:36 am 12/7.
Hex inspector:
There is nothing in the text box. The only information shown was the following and it was in the upper right corner of the window:
Meter Number: 3435
Meter Model: EKM-25IDS-N v.2
Port: \\.\COM3
Baud: 1200
Read Interval: 43200

Thanks for your help,
Tim

Thanks Tim,

Im guessing your meter is sending bad data over the Hex (vs not responding at all). You have your read rate set to 43200 seconds, will you set it to once per every 10 seconds? That way you will be able to see the hex come in once every 10 seconds and not have to wait 43200 seconds. I will be looking at your Hex data to see if there is data corruption from your meter.

Here is the hex info after a bad read response:

20 30 30 30 20 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 34 38 33
35 30 31 31 36 31 32 30 37 30 34 31 37 34 35 31
31 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30
30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30 30

It is reading part of the time successfully. Here is the hex after a successful read:

35 30 31 31 36 31 32 30 37 30 34 31 37 35 31 34

Hope this helps.
Thanks.

Hello Tim,

It has been a while since I parsed a v.2 meter.

Can you confirm your meter number? Is it 3435?

From what I am seeing it looks like you are only sending me a partial Hex response. It very well could be the Dash is only reporting a partial read in the Hex inspector. See the attached screenshot, it is like what you are telling me is just the portion under the purple line. (Dash is not well tested on v.2 meters)

What is your ratio of good reads to bad reads?

Hello Tim,

Thanks, at first I though all of your meter reads were "bad meter responses". Now it just sounds like either a connectivity issue, or how the Dash reads legacy v.2 meters. I would increase your read rate. Right now you are reading your meter once every 12 hours, I would increase this to once per hour. That way a 30-40% good read rate should not be an issue.

Reads were 100% before I tried to set the date. It's curious.
