Gas Meter Mounting

Post by lsimper »

Can the 3/4" Pulse Output Gas Meters be mounted indoors in a dedicated utility room in the basement near where the utility meter comes into our property?

Hello lsimper, welcome to the forum and thanks for your question.

We never recommend that you install one of our gas meters indoors. There is just too much liability surrounding what would happen if there were to be a gas leak. If there were a leak the gas buildup could cause a dangerous situation. We recommend that the gas meters are installed outdoors in well ventilated locations.

Thanks,
Jameson

What if we installed an AutoTrip® Meter (LFD) Excess Flow Valve? These valves are designed to be positioned after (downstream from) the gas meter. In this location, the valve is designed to protect against a catastrophic failure of the main trunk line. I have seen commercial sub-meter applications using this setup for meter placement in a secured, well ventilated utility room.

Yes you would want to protect against a catastrophic leak, but I think you would also want to protect against a very slow small leak that would be able to build up gas concentration to a dangerous level in an indoor unventilated space.

If someone were to install a gas meter indoors I would always say that it should be located in a very well ventilated space and you should consider using a device like this: http://qmimfg.com/gas-products/gas-guar ... -monoxide/

I have never used a detection device like this, so cannot vouch for it, but I like the idea.
