Electric vehicle charging station

Post by Peter »

I'm new to this forum. We're going to install electric car charging stations on our hotel parking lots, mainly for our overnight guests. Instead of purchasing very expensive quick charge equipment, we're going to install 50 Amp (NEMA 14-50R) single phase outlets. In one location we have 240V, but in two others it's 208V.
My first question is if the WattHour reading of 208 VAC will be accurate using 240V meter?
The second question is, what would be the best choice of the meter to measure amount of energy used by the customer? We need to be able to zero out the meter before each charge. The meter will be mounted outside next to fusible disconnect. If necessary we can mount it inside of lockable enclosure. After each use we need to get the reading and charge customer accordingly. A digital meter with ability to convert watt hour units into dollars and cents would be ideal.
I would appreciate any help and suggestions.
Thanks, Peter

Hello Peter,

Welcome to the forum!

Thank you for your interest in our electric meters.

We would highly recommend our EKM-Omnimeters v.3 coupled with the EKM Push system for this application. With this system in place you would have the data you need on your computer (where it is much easier to manipulate and track). This is a lot better than using one of our Basic read off the face meters. The EKM Push gateway will automatically read all of your meters and send the data to your EKM Push account. This is a truly plug and play system, and is much more scalable if you are going to install at multiple hotels.

You would get a read once per minute that includes what you need to bill, which is kilowatt hours (kWh). You will be able to see how many kWh there were at the beginning of the charging session, and how many were consumed by the hotel guest by the time they left. You could then charge the hotel guest for exactly how much they used. You will not be able to zero out the meter itself (this is by design to prevent tampering), but when you have the data in hand, it is an easy matter to calculate how many kWh were used in a given session. It is also easy to convert this to a dollar amount.

We will be adding Billing to the EKM Dash software very soon. Then we will add short term billing for your exact situation (or RV parks, etc.)

The Omnimeter v.3 will accurately meter both your 240 volt system and your 208 volt system.

Best regards,
Jameson
