120V and 240V metering with 15E

Post by Jrossow »

I have a large amount of refrigeration equipment (120V and 240V)that I would like to monitor energy usage periodically. Perhaps I would monitor one piece of equipment for a week and then switch to another. For low cost, flexibility and ease of switching, I would like to use multiple 15E models with split CTs to avoid determinating wires. Obviously the 15E is for 120V circuits, not 240V. So, my question is, would manually summing the output of two 15E meters (one on L1 and one on L2) give correct results? Thank you in advance for your help.

A couple things:

Yes you can use one EKM 15E on each side of a 120/240 volt 3-wire circuit. Both 15Es would only be measuring 120 volts, if you combined the kWh from each you would get the total kWh for the 120/240 volt 3-wire circuit. However, the EKM 15E will not work with split core CTs. They only work with the solid core CT that they come with.

If you want split core CTs, I would use the EKM Omnimeter I v.3. Just one EKM Omnimeter with 2 current transformers will be all you need to measure your 120/240 volt 3-wire loads, or an EKM Omnimeter with 1 CT will work for your 120 volt 2-wire loads.

Hope this helps,
Jameson
